The San Francisco Zoo & Gardens is home to more than 2,000 exotic, endangered, and rescued animals, representing more than 250 species in 100 acres of majestic and peaceful gardens nestled alongside the Pacific Ocean. An urban oasis that opened in 1920, this historic and beloved attraction features Asian and black rhinos, giraffes, big cats, apes, gorillas, monkeys, and much more, including an interactive feeding and petting zoo for kids.
At Grizzly Gulch, visitors can get nose-to-nose with rescued grizzly sisters Kachina and Kiona. Lemurs leap through the Lemur Forest, the largest outdoor lemur habitat in the country. Penguin Island is home to the largest colony of Magellanic penguins outside of the wild. The zoo’s troop of gorillas lives in the lush Gorilla Preserve.
In addition to the wonderful animals that you’ll see during a visit to the San Francisco Zoo, you will also find bountiful gardens and plentiful plants. With San Francisco’s year-round mild climate, the zoo can grow a wide variety of plants from all over the world, including beautiful California native plants and unique specimens from exotic locales.
